Emily Ballantyne

Emily Ballantyne graduated with her B.S. in Mechanical Engineering in June of 2017. She began her coursework at Drexel in the Biomedical Engineering program, but changed her major following her second co-op. She is currently working on new product development as a mechanical engineer for Bose Corporation in Framingham, MA.

Emily’s undergraduate work experience ranged from a large company summer internship at DEKA Research & Development, to a 6-month co-op with a medical device start-up, to research both in the United States and abroad. As a pre-junior, Emily completed a 6-month co-op at Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile in Santiago on a Whitaker International Undergraduate Scholarship in 2014. Working under Dr. Daniel E. Hurtado, she assisted in the computational biophysics and biomechanics lab on a project aimed at quantifying lung strain using Finite Element Methods. When she wasn’t in the lab, she could be found learning Chilean Spanish, hiking, running, and eating plenty of empanadas. On campus, Emily conducted research with Dr. Hisham Abdel-Aal of the Mechanical Engineering Department to investigate the surface properties of snakeskin and applications of the team’s findings to improve efficiency of current mechanical systems.
